I immediately emailed him back saying I was ready to help with anything! We met at his office October 14th at 2:30pm and discussed what I would be doing. I was thrilled! I also took it upon myself to bring in some coffee that was free as per my mark out at work, and some tongs, for the hot dogs that we were to have for lunch/dinner...and a spoon, to serve the relish for those hot dogs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 14th, I noticed an exhibit outside of CV Starr Hall at Hofstra and decided to cover it. It was about the soldiers who had died in the war in Iraq in New York State. I had already borrowed a FlipCam from the Equipment Room at Dempster Hall and interviewed the woman who was running the exhibit. My video can be seen here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 15th, covering the debate and all of its goings on on campus was amazing!! I woke up at 7AM since I was so exicted and went to Starbucks to get my marked out coffee and something for myself. I must have been really excited because I dropped my drink and made the baristas clean it up. I'm sorry!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got to campus at around 8:30 AM and went to grab some free breakfast at a tent near Barnard and Calkins Halls on campus.

This was in preparation for the Brian Lehrer Show brought to Hofstra by WNYC. I was in attendance at the show and was able to catch an interview with Lehrer. I apologize for misspelling his name on my video, and if I could, I would go into it and fix it. I am sorry Mr. Lehrer.

The radio show was very nice. There were 2 speakers at first, both Debate Team members at Hofstra University. One named Drew and the other was Sid Nathan. They are both also members of POISE, the speech making group/club on campus.

After listening to Drew, a Republican and Sid, a Democrat, state their cases, Brian Lehrer brought on more guests. I don't remember exactly who it was, but it was amazing listening to everyone. Brian was able to integrate the guests and us, the audience into his show, so that the listeners to his radio program all over the world, didn't know who was who. Which was utterly amazing!

Later in the broadcast we talked about college tuition for Lehrer's '30 issues in 30 days' segment. It was the 2nd hour of the show. Many students in the audience, including high school students, Hofstra students, Stony Brook students and others from a French school in Africa, as well as faculty members and some parents....all were shocked at the amount of money that college, especially Hofstra, costs. Everyone hoped that the next President of the United States can do something about that.

After the radio broadcast, I went to the NewsHub at Hofstra's Dempster Hall to create a video package for Professor Krochmal. My final piece can be seen at Nassau News. Amanda, my friend from my Mass media class last semester, helped me create that video.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Afterwards, we went to Memorial Hall so that we could make her project work. We fiddled around with our Maranz (sp?), a fancy audio recorder and were able to make it work...although the headphones didn't and it was really a bad scenario. We just decided to record and hope for the best.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Off to the Student Center at Hofstra University! We went to Issue Ally and saw Amanda's roomie, Mallory was the Italian club, Ciao, table helping them promote themselves and their issue that they stood for. After that, we went to get some buttons and were able to get a Hofstra Debate '08 button as a souvenir, which was so cool since there weren't any other give-a-ways that we could take advantage of.

After Issue Ally, Amanda and I set off to grab some "silly interviews" for her radio assignment. We conlcuded to ask the public if they could have a super power what would it be and why. Many people answered our question and we were easily able to get her one minute of "the voice of the people" that she needed. After that, we went to her dorm to chill out. Oops, before we went to her dorm, Amanda and I stopped at Dutch Treats to get deli sandwiches.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mallory came back to the dorm and I was able to interview her for my "writing for broadcast" class assignment of a 30 second audio interview of me and someone else. I asked her about the diner she used to work at and its unhealthy practices. (I ended up handing in the assignment one day late, getting an 83 and minus-ing 25 points since it was late and ending up with an darn 58!) Bu, had I handed it in on time, I would've gotten an 83, so it was darn good assignment then!

At around six o'clock, Amanda and I went to the Student Center again. We stopped by a huge section of stuff that Mallory had told us about and I was able to make some buttons!! (Finally, give-a-ways!) CNN had sponsored the button making and I made mine say "Vote For President" instead of including Obama or McCain's name...and "I'm Pro Free Press" instead of including a real issue I support. (Journalists are supposed to be unbiased)

We got to see some really cool stuff and my personal videos of this are on my Blip Channel.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At around seven o'clock, Amanda and I went to Dempster Hall. She had some editing to do of her radio assignment and I was off to do some fact checking! LIVE!!!!

Professors Fischkin and Goodman were in the room with us, we were in room 142 in Dempster at Hofstra. There were about 10 students in the room with me, and we were adjacent to the NewsHub and were able to see what was going on in there. Professor Krochmal had hot dogs and other noshes for us to enjoy as well as coffee!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I decided I needed some dinner and the hot dogs looked odd, so I went to Bits and Bytes in Memorial Hall, but it was closed. So I went to the Student Center and got something to eat. I brought it back to room 142 in Dempster Hall and was able to eat it during the broadcast of the debate.

David Gordon, another student of Professor Krochmal, was in charge of what we needed to find and when. During the pre-debate show on C-Span and CNN, David had us look up things that raised eyebrows.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the debate, that is also what we did. When McCain or Obama said something questionable, we immediately looked it up. The turn around was really fast. Everything was being broadcast on Nassau News. It was so cool and so much fun!!!

During the broadcast, when Joe The Plumber was mentioned, Professor Fischkin suggested that we look up a Joe Plumber in Long Island. I found one in Williston Park, NY and called him right away. I left a message for him (and he called me back the next day while I was grocery shopping).

All in all, it was an amazing experience. On my way home, I was floating! This is definitely what I want to do in life! If anything, this confirmed it for me.

Censorship in Nassau County - Print Article

Censorship is a major problem in Nassau County public schools and libraries, according to the Nassau chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU). That is why, executive director Tara Keenan-Thomson says it is necessary to present a traveling exhibit about censorship and its consequences, to public libraries in the County.

Danielle Hindieh, graduate of C.W. Post, began a chapter of the NYCLU on campus a few years ago. Her experiences were “enlightening” as a college student and she is proud of her accomplishments. She said that the school administration was very conservative and seemed against the idea of beginning this organization on campus. However, widespread campus involvement in signing petitions changed the school administration’s mind.

Alex Erlich, graduate of Locust Valley High School and current Hofstra University junior, recalls how in high school he was unable to “to search for any images [online] at all for fear that we would search for pornographic things.” This was shocking to Erlich and his high school colleagues, despite their signatures on an Acceptable Use Policy for the internet that many schools have adopted.

Thomson, and the NYCLU, want to “let people know that censorship is alive and well…we need to beware of all the different kinds on censorship [that there is] because a lot of people don’t realize censorship is happening in the schools and in the libraries.” She did offer some empathy to teachers, since Thomson is a former instructor, saying that “often times librarians don’t realize it or teachers don’t realize that they are censoring when they are…they don’t realize the impact that might have on the students education and the public’s education.” She adds that, “we want people to just be aware that this is alive and well and we need to guard against it.”

Throughout the month of April, the censorship exhibit will be at the Locust Valley Library. When asked about their censorship practices, the Library offered no comment. Later in the summer, the exhibit will continue all throughout Long Island’s public libraries. Thomson explained that public schools did not have enough space to devote to this exhibit, which is why they are not hosting it.

Overall, censorship is an issue that is still highly controversial. According to the American Library Association, there are still books that are being banned around the country. The list of books includes, “Harry Potter” by JK Rowling, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” by Maya Angelou, and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” by Mark Twain. Citizens are not able to enjoy the books that they’re entitled to by their first amendment rights.

Censorship Project Photographs

Page 1 from the censorship exhibit Tara Keenan-Thomson, Executive Director for Nasasu Chapter of NYCLU

Production Memo

Production Memo:

This project was difficult. I originally wanted to do this project on illegal housing in Hempstead, NY; then I changed my mind to reporting on the hunger situation in Hempstead, NY. After much deliberation, I finally changed my mind to covering censorship in Nassau public schools and libraries.

After visiting the Locust Valley Library, in Locust Valley NY in the North Shore, I decided that this was an important topic to be discussed.

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU), Nassau Chapter, has a floating exhibit at the libraries of Nassau County throughout the summer.

After not being allowed to film or take pictures, according to the library, I contacted the Nassau NYCLU chapter.

The Locust Valley Library would not allow me to interview them at all, about their censorship or lack of, rules. The library’s director, Ms. Schoen (no relation to me) refused to let me question her without a copy of my questions be sent to her superiors. After said questions were sent, no responses were given to me from numerous phone calls and emails left in her inbox.

I decided to interview the Nassau NYCLU, of which executive director Tara Keenan-Thomson was more than happy to meet with me a few times over the phone and finally in person when she returned from vacation.

When multiple requests to interview school administrators turned up nothing, I turned to Facebook. Facebook granted me access to former Locust Valley High School students. Many of those students most likely received an email from me requesting to interview them for this project. One student, Alex Erlich, was kind enough to meet with me. At 9:00pm, we conducted our interview.

Meeting the deadline was another story. Since my contacts were almost un-contactable, meeting the first Monday at noon deadline was virtually impossible. However, this project was a lot of fun. This is definitely what my passion is, digging and asking questions.

Transcription of Censorship Movie and Interviews

Sarah Schoenholtz: Reporting for Nassau News, this is Sarah Schoenholtz

Interview with Tara Keenan-Thomson, Executive Director of NYCLU Nassau County chapter.

Sarah Schoenholtz: What is the basis of the ex that u are presenting currently in the Locust Valley Library.

Tara Keenan-Thomson: uh, well it’s an example on censorship in public schools and libraries, and it deals with specific instances of censorship throughout America and there’s, there’s, uh, a good few examples of censorship that have censorship that has happened in Long Island

Schoenholtz: Do you have any specific ex’s of censorship on Long Island or in Nassau County that you could recall?

T: :laughs: – I’m sure I do, yeah, well I mean there’s the famous Island Trees case which um which went to United States Supreme Court and that case involved a school bored taking books off the shelf, um, from the school library, uh, because they were listed on um, you know, some organizations list as, um, I think the quote was ‘un-American, uh, anti Semitic ,and just plain filthy’ something like that so, um, so they went and took those books off the shelf and um and students actually then, um, wanted to sue based on their access to information and 1st amendment, so, we did represented them and that went all the way up the Supreme Court and it became a landmark decision that once the books are on the self the stay on the shelf

S: I read that in the pamphlet that you had out there, I actually took one if that’s ok?

T: Yeah, sure.

S: Ok, ok and what are you doing or hoping to do or hoping to change by presenting this exhibit in local libraries?

T: um basically what we want to do is let people know that censorship is alive and well. And that we need to beware of all the different kinds on censorship because a lot of people don’t realize um that you know censorship is happening in the schools and in the libraries and, um, you know, often times librarians don’t realize it or teachers don’t realize that they are censoring when they’re, when they’re, doing different things and they don’t realize the impact that that might have on the students education and the public’s education so, so we want people to just be aware that this is alive and well and we need to guard against it.

S: Are you meeting any opposition from the libraries or schools that you wanted to put this exhibit in?

T: No.

S: No, well that’s good. – And is there anything for schools and libraries that are being censored now? Like is there any censorship that you know of that is happening in the most recent 2000 years, I mean like 2000 until now?

T: Censorship happens every day, you know, I can rattle off a million different examples of times where, uh, a teacher may change the language of a play that they’re performing often ties if they have a Broadway style play that they perform, um, they tend to be very sexually suggestive and so they may have teachers trying to um figure out what the line is between having a fifteen year old get on stage and do you know perform a sexually suggestive dance for example and um and freedom of expression and um freedom, freedom of access to ideas. And so it’s a very hard thing to balance for teachers, having been a teacher, I understand that, um, so I mean it literally, I don’t have examples of things having gone to the courts, um, in the past year but, um, but having worked in schools having worked with people who’ve worked in schools um and libraries, it’s something everybody must battle against, the instinct to just shield, um, students and and its something that everybody must weigh and come out with, um, their own approach to it and hopefully with this exhibit they can look and see how different schools and libraries have approached it, um, and successfully gotten through it.

S: Do any students or have any students in the most recent, maybe 5 to 7 years, come to you or your organization and asked for help, saying “Hi I’m being censored, can you help me out?”

T: Um, not specifically in terms of their expression, but their access to ideas, yes, we had one student from a Nassau County school saying that they’re not getting any sex education.

S: I’m assuming it’s a public school?

T: Yes.

S: Ok.

T: And that the only thing being taught in that particular public school is abstinence only, and it’s kind of shocking when u think, oh we’re from NY, and you know, we already know the rules about this, and we know what we can and can’t do, you we sort of take, un we see ourselves of NY exceptionalists, like it doesn’t happen here, because we’re so liberal, or we’re so open to these ideas, we’re so multicultural, and that like of thing but actually in um, in places like this, where you have a lot of, uh, um, you know, different school systems and that kind of thing it can happen and that it can happen very easily because it not under, you know, 1 you know, huge system’s control, you know.

Interview with Alex Ehrlich, graduate of Locust Valley High School; Current Hofstra University Junior

Sarah Schoenholtz: May I have your name please?

Alex Ehrlich: Alex Ehrlich

S: And what was your experience at Locust Valley High School?

E: about censorship, I guess?

S: Of censorship, yes.

E: You weren’t allowed to search for any images at all for fear that we would search for pornographic things, that’s what they said at least.

S: That’s interesting. One of the

key elements of this work will be the introduction or refinement of coffee tasting, or

“cupping”, an essential skill for small farmer organizations to develop in order to better

manage coffee quality.
